Family of Thomas Calkin

Research was made in January 2004 to try and trace information about this family.
Firstly the wife of Thomas, Margaret Kirk. No baptism could be discovered in the register of Stafford, St. Mary, but in the nearby parish of Stone, St Michael, the register (F.STONE/2) has the following entry:
Baptised by the Minister of Fulford, 1705):
Margareta, daughter of Thomas Keark of Spotgate baptised 9th December 1705.

As the entry is in Latin (I have a copy of this document), the latinised version of Margaret is used. The spelling of the surname is different, bit this was not at all unusual in these times. Assuming this entry to be correct, it would put her marriage age at 25, and her age at time of death as 55.
Margaret's burial entry is in the register of St Mary, Stafford (I have a copy of this entry too). It simply says:
Margaret Calkin, widow ..... Buried 18th February 1761
Calkin, Thomas
Eldest of 3 children born to Thomas and Anne
"The Inns and Alehouses of Stafford: Through the South Gate" by John Connor lists Nathaniel's son Thomas Calkin as the first Publican in Stafford.
BUT, from the details I already had and the dates involved, I believe this to have been this GRANDSON Thomas.
The following is from John Connor's book:
In 1670 Nathaniel leased a strip of land from Stafford Corporation between the river and
Thomas Marston's house, which was attached to the east side of the Green Gate.
By 1699 he had built a cottage on the land adjacent to the Green Bridge.
His son Thomas inherited and held the lease until his death in 1741.
Thomas's widow Margaret who continued the lease was known to have a licensed Alehouse in 1753-55 and
due to it's proximity to the bridge named it the Bridge Tavern.

In 1765 her son also called Thomas Calkin sold the lease to a Richard Whitworth.

Baptised: 11.06.1706 at St Mary, Stafford
Married: 03.12.1730 to Margaret Kirk at St Mary, Stafford
         Will Proved: 22.05.1739 at Whitesmith
Calkin (nee Kirk), Margaret
There is an entry in the National Burial Index for Margaret.
It reads: "Burial Date 18 Feb.1761 - Margaret Calkin, at St. Mary's, Stafford, Staffs."
Baptised: 09.12.1705 at St. Michael, Stone, Staffordshire.
Buried: 18.02.1761 at St. Mary, Stafford.

Two Children
Thomas
Eldest of 2 children born to Thomas and Margaret
The "Staffordshire Advertiser Index to Births, Marriages and Deaths 1795-1820" has the following entry:
Thomas Calkin died 20.06.1801
I would think from the burial date below that the date above is the reported date afterwards.
Baptised: 01.08.1731 at St. Mary, Stafford
Married: 04.11.1755 to Mary Langley (of Shrewsbury) at St Mary, Stafford
Buried: 16.06.1801 at St Mary, Stafford (Died aged 69)
This information is confirmed on the National Burial Index.
Joseph
Baptised: 19.11.1732 at St. Mary, Stafford
Married: 28.07.1751 to Catherine Prosser at St. Mary, Stafford
Buried: 12.03.1762 at St. Mary, Stafford

Not As Old As You Thought.

In order to bring official time into line with solar time the calendar in England was adjusted so that the 2nd of September 1752 became the 14th September 1752. Meaning that the 3rd to 13th September 1752 never happened.
Therefore everyone who lived through this period was actually 12 days younger when they died than you may expect them to be.

My thanks to Mrs. Elizabeth Newman of the Staffordshire County Archive Service
for her invaluable assistance with the Jan.2004 research of this Calkin family.
