Sarah Panchaud (nee Sarah Calkin) (as above, b. 1759)
From correspondent Marcia Watson, I was sent a rather odd Will extract for Sarah Calkin dated 1813.
In that entry it does state that she is a widow, therefore husband Paul must have died sometime between 1804 and 1813, but no such record has been found.
The Will also mentions her brother Joseph Calkin and his son William. Why any of these are singled out for mention is not stated, but it is quite interesting, so the
following is all that I have been sent.
This extract is from the will of Juliana SETON of Clarges Street, Piccadilly and is dated 1813.
.... And I give and bequeath unto Sarah Panchaud of Duke Street, Grosvenor Square in the said County of Middlesex widow all my leasehold messuages situate
and being No 1 Prospect Buildings Highgate and in the said County of Middlesex to hold unto the said Sarah Panchaud her exors admons or assigns for so much
of the residue of the term of years which shall be to (come) therein at the time of my decease of the said Sarah Panchaud shall happen to live but subject
nevertheless to the payment of the rent and performance of the Covenant contained in the lease under which I hold the same. And in case the said Sarah Panchaud
shall happen to depart this life before the expiration of the said lease then I give and bequeath the said leasehold and messuages to George Panchaud of
Duke Street aforesaid son of the said Sarah Panchaud his exors admons and assigns for all the residue of the term of years which shall be to come therein
at the time of the decease of the said Sarah Panchaud subject aforesaid. Also I give and bequeath unto Sarah Panchaud all my Wine and other Liquors which
shall be in my aforesaid house in Prospect Buildings Highgate at the time of my decease. Also I give and bequeath unto the said Sarah Panchaud the use of all
my household furniture household utensils and implements plate linen and china which shall be in my aforesaid house at Prospect Buildings Highgate at the time
of my decease for and during the term of her natural life. And from and after the decease of the said Sarah Panchaud I give and bequeath the same household
furniture household utensils and implements plate linen and china unto the said George Panchaud heirs exors admons and assigns.
Upon Trust this further Trust and confidence that my said Trustees do and shall pay the yearly sum of forty pounds residue to the said two hundred pounds
Long Annuities subject to such deductions as aforesaid unto Joseph Calkin of Wells Street Oxford Street in the County of Middlesex Boot and Shoe Maker
during his natural life and from and immediately upon the decease of the said Joseph Calkin Upon Trust to assign and transfer the said forty pounds per annum
Long Annuities unto William Calkin fourth son of the said Joseph Calkin his exors admons and assigns.
Marcia Watson is an ancestor of Juliana Seton.
And I thank Marcia for the above information.
Not As Old As You Thought.
In order to bring official time into line with solar time the calendar in England was adjusted so that the 2nd of September
1752 became the 14th September 1752. Meaning that the 3rd to 13th September 1752 never happened.
Therefore everyone who lived through this period was actually 12 days younger when they died than you may expect them to be.
The Huguenots
The Huguenots were French Protestants who were members of the Reformed Church established in France by John Calvin in about 1555, and who, due to religious persecution, were forced to flee France to other countries in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
See The Huguenots.
My thanks to Mrs. Elizabeth Newman of the Staffordshire County Archive Service
for her invaluable assistance with the early research of this Calkin family.
