Fourth of 8 children born to Joseph and Mary
Occupation : Musician.
The Royal Society of Musicians records the following:
Entry dated - 7th May 1815
"Samuel is engaged as First Tenor at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane
and Haymarket, and violin at the oratorios of Theatre Royal Covent Garden."
The 1841 census has Samuel and wife Eliza living in William Street with children, Joseph, Alfred, Henry and Pierre.
Samuel's occupation is given as "Musician".
The 1851 census has Samuel and wife Eliza living at 50, William Street with son Alfred and grandson Samuel Richard.
Samuel's occupation is given as "Musician".
In 1852 Samuel's address is listed in Historical Directories as - 50, William Street, Regents Park.
The 1861 census shows Samuel and his wife Elizabeth still living at 50, William Street, Regents Park, Pancras.
Now they are aged 70 and 69, no children are living with them, but they do have
one servant, Ellen Boyce aged 19 from London.
The Will of Samuel Calkin
SAMUEL CALKIN of Willoughby Street, New Lenton, Notts.
Money in bank in joint names of four sons, Joseph George, Henry, John Tilley and Pierre Jacques Poitry, to be sold and equally divided between my surviving children.
Clothes and silver watch to son Joseph. Her mother's wedding ring to my daughter. Silver watch and Gold Seal to son Samuel. My other sons, Nil, having had much more than they deserved for the ill treatment I have experienced from each of them. Residue to Elizabeth Moorby (Widow) of Willoughby Street, New Lenton, Notts.
Dated 12th November 1866. Witnesses: Francis Quarton, Richard Weeks.

         Born: c. 1792 1861 census says born in Berkshire.
         Died: 04.03.1863 Aged 71, registered in St. Pancras

Elizabeth Ann
It is believed that Elizabeth emigrated by herself to France.
She suffered great trials as the consequence of the Franco/Prussian war (1870-71).
The greatest of which was the death of her husband during the siege of Paris.
They actually lived four miles from the city, but left their home to seek shelter within the walls of Paris.
She returned to her own house to find it a ruin.

         Baptised: 06.04.1814 at St. Mary, Lambeth
         Married: c. 08.1867 to Balthazar Schmitt in Saint-Maur-des-Fosses, Val-de-Marne, France.
Balthazar was a widower who's 1st wife died in June 1867, just six weeks prior to marrying Elizabeth.
Balthazar was born 1799 in Hartzviller, Moselle, France, died 14.12.1870 in Paris (aged 71).

         Married: 09.07.1842 to Elizabeth Whitehead at Old Church, St.Pancras, London
         Died: c. 03.1875 Aged 57, registered in London C.

         Married: 02.03.1840 to Mary Ann Stubley at Bloomsbury
         Married: 19.05.1859 to Mary Kavanagh in New York, U.S.A.
         Died: 02.03.1885 in New Jersey, U.S.A.

The 1851 census has Alfred living with his parents as above.

The Royal Society of Musicians records the following:
Entry dated - 5th December 1852
"Violin Tenor and Piano Forte, and holds (for a second season),
a situation in Drury Lane Orchestra.
Is also reingaged for the approaching season at Vauxhall Gardens."

On birth certificate of Pierre Edward dated 28th November 1855,
occupation is entered as "Professor of Music", and
address is given as 19, Cumberland Market, Regents Park

Julian's birth certificate of 1864 has family address at 83, Pratt Street, Camden Town,
with father's occupation as "Teacher of music".

Occupation in 1881 census = "Musician"
The 1881 census has Pierre aged 50 living with his wife and five children at 54, Bishops Road, Lambeth, Surrey.

         Born: 02.03.1831 at Middlesex
         Baptised: 21.08.1831 at Old Church, St. Pancras, London
         Married: 08.04.1850 to Eleanor Braine at St.John's in the parish of Chelsea.
         Died: 30.03.1894 at 8, Wood's Road (aged 64)
Cause of death - Paraplegia.
