Calkin, William Eighth of 11 children born to Joseph and Mary Initially a musician (string player and pianist) in London. The Royal Society of Musicians records the following: Entry dated - 6th July 1819 "William performs on the Piano Forte, the Violin, and Violincello, and is engaged in the Orchestra at Drury Lane theatre" Moved to Arundel, where he was organist at St. Nicholas Parish Church. Music shop owner in Maltravers Street, Arundel, and lived close by in Orchard Place. William's business address as listed in Historical Directories as, 1833 - William Calkin, Music Seller and Teacher of Maltravers Street, Arundel, Sussex. 1839 - William Calkin, Music Seller and Teacher of Maltravers Street, Arundel, Sussex. 1841 census has William (occupation - "Organist") living with wife Charlotte at Orchard Place, King Street, Arundel with eight children: William, Louisa, Amelia, Charles, Frederick, Emily, Ellen and Clara. By the 1851 census William had died and Charlotte had moved back to London (see below). |

Calkin (nee Lowndes), Charlotte Daughter of Matthew and Martha Lowndes. 1851 census, after her husband had died, has Charlotte moved back to London, living at 41, Charles Street, Marylebone. Her occupation on the entry is very hard to read, but looks something like "Assistant". As head of the family, she lives with three daughters, Emily, Ellen and Clara. 1871 census lists Charlotte aged 75 living at 91, Euston Road, St. Pancras with two unmarried daughters, Laura and Ellen. Also staying with her is Clara's daughter Charlotte Vogt (aged 6) |

Her occupation is given as "Dressmaker". 1881 Ellen Calkin was known to be unmarried and living in Westminster, where she was a "Needlewoman". |
