Calkin, William
Eighth of 11 children born to Joseph and Mary
Initially a musician (string player and pianist) in London.
The Royal Society of Musicians records the following:
Entry dated - 6th July 1819
"William performs on the Piano Forte, the Violin, and Violincello,
and is engaged in the Orchestra at Drury Lane theatre"
Moved to Arundel, where he was organist at St. Nicholas Parish Church.
Music shop owner in Maltravers Street, Arundel, and lived close by in Orchard Place.
William's business address as listed in Historical Directories as,
1833 - William Calkin, Music Seller and Teacher of Maltravers Street, Arundel, Sussex.
1839 - William Calkin, Music Seller and Teacher of Maltravers Street, Arundel, Sussex.
1841 census has William (occupation - "Organist") living with wife Charlotte at Orchard Place, King Street, Arundel with
eight children: William, Louisa, Amelia, Charles, Frederick, Emily, Ellen and Clara.
By the 1851 census William had died and Charlotte had moved back to London (see below).

         Married: 04.10.1817 to Charlotte Lowndes at St. Georges, Hanover Square
         Died: 29.04.1849 in Worthing
Calkin (nee Lowndes), Charlotte
Daughter of Matthew and Martha Lowndes.
1851 census, after her husband had died, has Charlotte moved back to London, living at 41, Charles Street, Marylebone.
Her occupation on the entry is very hard to read, but looks something like "Assistant".
As head of the family, she lives with three daughters, Emily, Ellen and Clara.
1871 census lists Charlotte aged 75 living at 91, Euston Road, St. Pancras with two unmarried daughters, Laura and Ellen.
Also staying with her is Clara's daughter Charlotte Vogt (aged 6)
         Baptised: 27.12.1795 at St.Mary, St. Marylebone, London
         Died: 29.09.1879 at Windsor in the presence of her granddaughter Amelia Maud Spencer.
Cause of death recorded as "Schirrus Uteri"

In the National Burial Index, Charlotte is listed as being buried at
St. Nicholas, Arundel on 11th December 1835 aged 15 years 8 months.

1841 census has Louisa living with her parents as above.
1871 census lists name as "Laura" aged 47 living with her mother and sister Ellen at 91, Euston Road, Pancras.

Amelia
1841 census has Amelia living with her parents as above.

         Died: c. 06.1901 Aged 75, registered in Windsor.

1841 census has Charles living with his parents as above.

         Baptised: 12.08.1827 at Arundel, Sussex
         Married: 26.12.1850 to Rebecca Maria Purdey at St. Mary, Newington, Surrey
         Died: 13.06.1861 Aged 34, registered in Shoreditch

Architect and Surveyor.
1841 census has Frederick living with his parents as above.
         Born: 11.03.1829 at Arundel, Sussex
         Baptised: 05.04.1829 at Arundel, Sussex
         Married: 24.10.1859 to Elizabeth Millar at St. George, Hanover Square.
Emily
1841 census has Emily living with her parents as above.
Emily arrived in New York on 21st December 1855 to meet her fiance, Philip, who had come to the United States ahead of her.
They were married just two days later in Brooklyn, New York.
They raised their family in Meriden, Connecticut.

         Baptised: 17.02.1831 at Arundel, Sussex
         Married: 23.12.1855 to Philip Cope in Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.
Philip was born 4th June 1834 in Langley, Buckinghamshire.
His ancestry was from the Thame area of Oxfordshire, and were a family of shoemakers.
Philip died 10th April 1911, Aged 76 in Meriden.
Seven Children ... all born in Meriden, Connecticut, U.S.A.

1841 census has Ellen living with her parents as above.
1861 census Ellen is listed as living with her sister Clara (below),
      at 30, George Street, Portland Place Ward, Marylebone.
      Her occupation is given as "Dressmaker".
1871 census lists Ellen aged 36 living with her mother and sister Laura (Louisa ?) at 91, Euston Road, Pancras.
      Her occupation is given as "Dressmaker".
1881 Ellen Calkin was known to be unmarried and living in Westminster,
      where she was a "Needlewoman".
         Born: 26.09.1833 at Arundel, Sussex
         Baptised: 18.10.1833 at Arundel, Sussex
         Died: c. 03.1892 at St. George's H. Square (In the death index as aged 54, but still assume it's this Ellen).
Clara
Apprenticed to a dressmaker in London after her father's death.
1841 census has Clara living with her parents as above.
In the 1861 census Clara is listed as living with her husband, her son and her sister Ellen,
at 30, George Street, Portland Place Ward, Marylebone.
In the 1901 census Clara (Vogt) is widowed and living with her daughter Charlotte
and her husband Samuel Thorne at 17, Eversholt Street, St. Pancras, London.
         Born: 17.03.1837 at Arundel, Sussex
         Baptised: 09.04.1837 at Arundel, Sussex
         Married: 02.09.1858 to Frederick Augustus Sebastian Vogt, registered in Marylebone
Adelina (I have seen spellings of Adeliza)
         Born: 12.07.1839 at Arundel, Sussex
         Baptised: 04.08.1839 at Arundel, Sussex
         Died: 03.02.1841 Aged 18 months, at Arundel, Sussex
