Calkin, Ellis Varnam Middle of 3 children born to Ellis James and Barbara The 1851 census has Ellis (aged 9) living with his mother at 113, Waterloo Road, Rushton Grange, Stoke. Prior to leaving the country Ellis was working in London at St. Paul's as a buyer earning some £130 a year. Ellis left for South Africa in May 1866, arriving there on the 26th of May. We have a lot of detail about the emigration, and Ellis's arrival in South Africa in a superb letter he wrote to his Aunt Sarah. The letter is transcribed in full here: Ellis's Letter to Aunt Sarah. In the 1881 census Ellis is NOT mentioned. His wife and children are listed as living at 82, Mildmay Grove, London, but with the children's place of birth having been listed as in South Africa, it is fairly safe to assume that Ellis was probably still working abroad there at the time of the 1901 census. Ellis was in partnership with J.G. Chapman in South Africa (see Chapman names below). |
