Calkin (nee Palfrey), Margaret Agnes Daughter of Penry Powell Palfrey (1830-1902) and Joel Jemima Palfrey (nee Brand). Penry Powell Palfry was a famous and well-known artist. Initially he carved in stone. Later he worked in stained glass, particularly church decoration and heraldic work. Scores of churches contain his work and incredibly at the time of his death only two cathedrals were without it. Not until he was 54 did Penry turn to painting horses professionally. His exceptional merit was noted by the Duke of Westminster, Queen Victoria and Edward VII. Penry painted four of the Duke's Derby winners in large oils which are with the Westminster family.

Margaret Agnes Calkin, an interesting aside; Christina Rossetti wrote In The Bleak Midwinter which was set to music first by Holst and secondly by Harold Darke. When Harold was a music student he lived with Harry and Margaret Calkin in Hampstead. This carol was a Christmas present to my Margaret Agnes Calkin in 1909 and Ian Bernard Calkin has the original manuscript. All editions of the carol are headed "to MAC" but very few people know that this is Margaret Agnes Calkin. He subsequently dedicated 24 further pieces to her children. |
