Butler, Henry James Eldest of nine children born to Henry James and Rosina Hannah Henry's 1876 birth certificate gives his parents address as 33, Northumberland St., Poplar In the 1881 census Henry, aged 4, is living with his parents at 3, Custom Street, West Ham. In the 1891 census Henry, aged 14, is living with his parents at 13, Albert Road, West Ham. His occupation is listed as "Stevedore Clerk". Henry's 1896 marriage certifcate has him living at 26, London Road and Maud living (appropriately) at 5, Maud Road His occupation is given as "Stevedore". The marriage certificate also says he is 21 ... The 1911 census has Henry's wife, Maud (aged 33) living in Bristol with seven children (see below). Henry is not on their census entry ... I have yet to locate him. Around 1910-1914 Henry James Butler was a Publican, being the master of the Trout Tavern, Cherry Lane, Bristol. From family letters it appears there was a major fire there in 1913 where two of his children died. The web link above to the tavern also suggests that it ceased to be around that time. |
