Butler, Thomas Leonard (Pop) Fifth of 10 children born to Henry James and Maud Matilda Butler It is said that he was named after Sir Thomas Sutherland (once Director of the Post Office). The 1911 census has Leonard (aged 6) living with his mother at 71, Dove Street, Bristol, Gloucestershire. His occupation is given as "at School". Always known as "Len", he grew up to be a Mechanical Engineer. On daughter Stella's birth certificate in 1933 it shows their address as 67, Valence Circus, Dagenham. His occupation as "Engineer (Stamp Perforating)". During the Second World War Len was a searchlight operator. Nan and Pop lived at 33, Cavenham Gardens, Hornchurch for many many years. |

Butler (nee Smith), Elsie Emma Helen (Nan) Third of 7 children born to John Joseph and Mary Ann Smith The 1911 census has Elsie Emma Helen (aged 5) living with her parents at 11, Voluntary Place, Wanstead, Essex. Nan and Pop lived at 33, Cavenham Gardens, Hornchurch for many many years. Nan was a prolific knitter and we were all proud owners of her many jumpers and cardies ! She suffered with the condition known as "Petit Mal Epilepsy". After Len's death Nan moved to Basildon where she lived at 180, The Knares until her passing. |
