Research taken in Staffordshire.
Research was made in January 2004 to try and trace information about Nathaniel. To try and locate his parents, to
confirm his wife and date of marriage, and to confirm the children.
Checking the transcript of the register of St. Chad's, the baptisms of the first four children are all present. Oddly,
Nathaniell's wife was variously stated to be Mary, Eliza and Marie. Eliza is difficult to explain, although the others are
quite probably different spellings of the same name. The surname index of the register does not indicate that Nathaniel
was baptised at St. Chad's. Also the surname index did not show a marriage of Nathaniel.
Checking the register of St. Mary, Stafford, Nathaniel's youngest daughter, Maria, was baptised there. But again Nathaniel
himself could not be located in the index for a baptism or marriage.
The only other Anglican church in Stafford during this period was Castle Church, St. Mary. Once again though, searching the
register of that church did not reveal a baptism nor marriage for Nathaniel.
Finally the register of St. Mary, Stafford was searched for a burial of Nathaniel up to the year 1710, but no burial could
be located either.
So, in summary this thorough search still did not locate the origins of Nathaniel, one would have to assume he was either
baptised outside of this area and moved in ... or ... he never attended church.
I re-visited the Staffordshire Parish Registers on 29th June 2006, re-checking all the information above I also noticed that
Nathaniell's name was spelt with two L's in all examples, so I have added a second L.
In fact, in one of the entries it is spelt - Nattanniell.
I have shown the actual spelling's below along with the THREE different spellings of his surname !
The first volume of the St. Chad's Parish Register is from 1636-1715. It is 12" x 7" bound in parchment and is written in Latin, except for the period 1650-1683 which is in English.
Calkin, Nathaniel "The Inns and Alehouses of Stafford: Through the South Gate" by John Connor lists his son Thomas Calkin as the first Publican in Stafford. BUT, from the details I already had and the dates involved, I believe this to have been his GRANDSON Thomas. The following is from John Connor's book: In 1670 Nathaniel leased a strip of land from Stafford Corporation between the river and Thomas Marston's house, which was attached to the east side of the Green Gate. By 1699 he had built a cottage on the land adjacent to the Green Bridge. His son Thomas inherited and held the lease until his death in 1741. Thomas's widow Margaret who continued the lease was known to have a licensed Alehouse in 1753-55 and due to it's proximity to the bridge named it the Bridge Tavern. (to see the page in question click Here) In 1765 her son also called Thomas Calkin sold the lease to a Richard Whitworth. |

Five Children In times gone by if one child died young, a following child would be given the same name. This would explain the two Thomas's, but is unconfirmed currently.
Thomas St.Chad's Parish Register states the baptism date along with: Thomas, son of Nathaniell and Mary Kaulkin. |

Baptised: | 19.12.1671 | at St. Chad, Stafford
Margery St.Chad's Parish Register states the baptism date along with: Margery, daughter of Nattanniell and Eliza(?) Calkin. Note: the question mark is in the book of the registers, therefore the name probably was illegible There is a baptism registered for "Anna" on 17th June 1699 at St. Mary. The mother's name seems to be printed as "Margaria" - there is no father's name and the word "illegitimate" appears next to Anna's name. |
