Calkin, Alfred Lewis
Fourth of five children born to Pierre Jacques and Eleanor
1871 census lists Alfred L. aged 2, living with his parents as above.
At the time of his first marriage Alfred was living at 8, Woods Road, and his occupation was given as "Cheesemonger".
As you will see below his first bride died within weeks.
At the time of his second marriage, Alfred was living at 372, Lower Road, Woolwich, and his occupation was given as "Grocer's Assistant".
In 1896, the birth certificate of second daughter, Doris Rosetta, has his address as 131, Orchard Road, Plumstead and occupation as "Cheesemonger's Assistant".
In the 1901 census, Alfred, his second wife and four eldest children were staying as visitors at the home of George Harris,
at 21, Coxwell Road, Plumstead. Alfred's occupation is still listed as "Grocer's Assistant".
The 1911 census lists Alfred (aged 43) living with his wife and four children at 2, Wilson Street, North Cross, Deptford, Greenwich.
His occupation was given as "Cheesemonger".
Also listed is a boarder, Charles Shun (aged 32), he is a Grocers Assistant from Camden Town.
The 1921 census lists Alfred (aged 54) living with his wife and three children still at 2, Wilson Street, North Cross, Deptford, Greenwich.
His occupation was given as "Provision Merchant" for T.Disdel & Sons at 155 High St., Deptford.
In 1952 Alfred was living at 33, London Road, Braintree, Essex where he lived until he passed on.
         Born: 27.05.1867 in 22, Pratt Street, Camden Town and registered in St. Pancras.
         Married: 09.03.1890 to Bessie Daucey (b.1869), at St. Mark, Peckham, registered in Camberwell.
         Married: 21.08.1895 to Rosetta Ruth Wheeler (b.1874), at Woolwich registry office and registered in Woolwich.
         Died: 30.07.1957 Aged 89, registered in Braintree.
Cause of death: Coronary Thrombosis.
Calkin (nee Daucey), Bessie
Daughter of David Daucey a farmer.
         Born: c. 1869 at ?
         Died: c. 03.1890 Aged 21, married just a few weeks.
Death registered in Camberwell
Calkin (nee Wheeler), Rosetta Ruth
Daughter of Charles Wheeler an Engineer.
In the 1911 census Rose (aged 36) lives with her husband as above, she is not listed as Rosetta.
Her place of birth is given as Plumstead, Kent.
In the 1921 census Rosetta (aged 46) lives with her husband as above, occupation - "home duties".
         Born: 08.10.1874 in Plumstead, registered in Woolwich.
         Died: 05.11.1962 Aged 88, death registered in Braintree.

Nellie B.
Nellie is listed in the 1901 census as being with Alfred and Rosetta, but,
she was born long before either wedding, and has no entry in the Births index.
As to her marriage, without the certificate, this is an educated guess from all the facts available.
In the 1921 census Nellie Steere is living with her husband and daughter at 23, Anthony Road, South Norwood, Croydon.
Her husband Frederick is a Lorry Driver for James Smith Builders, Norwood Junction.
         Born: c. 1887 in Brixton.
         Married: c. 06.1916 to Frederick W. Steere (b. 1889), registered in Camberwell.
Two Children
      Rosina N. Steere (b. 03.1920), registered in Croydon.
      Doris I. Steere (b. 09.1923), registered in Croydon.
         Died: c. 06.1963 Aged 73, in Colchester, Essex.
Doris Rosetta Louise
Listed in the 1901 census as being with parents Alfred and Rosetta.
The 1911 census lists Doris (aged 14) living with her parents as above.
The 1921 census has Doris living with her husband Bert Davis (as below) at 57, Vanguard Street, Deptford with Son, Bert W.L. ..... plus ....
Her brother Alfred Lewis Calkin and his young family as below.
         Born: 14.07.1896 in Plumstead, registered in Woolwich
         Married: 25.08.1918 to Bertie John Davis, at St. John's Church, Deptford.
On Doris's death certificate Bertie was described as a "Clerk in Holy Orders, retired".

Ethel Elizabeth
Listed in the 1901 census as being with parents Alfred and Rosetta.
The 1911 census lists Ethel (aged 13) living with her parents as above.
Her occupation is given as "at School".
In the 1921 census Ethelwyn (aged 23) lives with her parents as above.
Her occupation is given as "Film Editor" working for Ideal Studios Picture Producers, Bercham Wood, Kent.

There is an "Elizabeth Calkin" who acted in several silent films, including "Ora Pro Nobis" (1917).
There is an "Ethelwyn Calkin" who acted in several silent films, including "The Rat" (1926).
Surely, it's highly likely this Ethel Elizabeth Calkin is them.
In IMDB the star of "Ora" is listed as Elizabeth Calkin.
And this quote from 1928 issue of "Who's Who In Filmland", could well be this Ethel:
"Born in London. Screen debut as the orphan child in "Ora Pro Nobis".
Doubled for Mae Marsh in "The Rat" (1926), and played a comedy Scotch maid in "Huntingtower" (with Sir Harry Lauder).
Assisted the British producer A.V. Bramble on various productions for four years, and has edited several films.
Height 5ft. 3ins, with golden hair and blue eyes.
Won a stage beauty competition ("Revue Beauties") when seventeen."

         Died: c. 09.1982 Aged 84, registered in Colchester.

Listed in the 1901 census as being with parents Alfred and Rosetta.
The 1911 census lists Alfred (aged 11) living with his parents as above.
The 1921 census does not show this Alfred Lewis (?)
         Born: 08.11.1899 in Charlton, registered in Woolwich
         Married: c. 03.1921 to Ethel Nellie Lewis, registered in Greenwich.
         Died: c. 03.1974 Aged 74, registered in Lewisham.
Beatrice Stella
         Born: c. 06.1903 registered in Woolwich
         Died: c. 06.1903 Aged 0, registered in Woolwich.
Arthur Henry H.
The 1911 census lists Arthur (aged 5) living with his parents as above.
It gives his place of birth as Stoke Newington.
         Born: c. 09.1905 in Stoke Newington, registered in Hackney (1b 481)
         Died: c. 12.1914 Aged 9, registered in Greenwich.
Harold Richard
In the 1921 census Harold (aged 9) lives with his parents as above and is listed as "In Education".

Stagename "Dick Calkin".
My grandfather (Arthur Calkin) actually appeared alongside Dick on odd occasions. Never planned.
Below we see a great picture of Dick (he is the one in the middle).
Following the final family member below, is an original poster from 1951 which actually features the two performing Calkins.
In 1952 Dick Calkin was living with his father in Braintree as given above.
