Herbert's address as listed in Historical Directories include; 1916-1919, annual entries at 224, Upland Road, East Dulwich, Camberwell S.E.22 There is an entry in the London Gazette dated 30.05.1919 which may be Herbert, it mentions Sergeant H.G. Calkin (64662) of the 14th Battalion (Dulwich) Machine Gun Corps. The 1921 census has Herbert "Gurtin" (aged 33) living with his wife, daughter and mother at 224, Upland Road, East Dulwich, Camberwell. His occupation is declared as = "Editor Assistant" working for County Life, Newspapers at 20, Fewistock, Covent Garden, WC1. On 29th March 1926 Herbert Gurth Calkin of "Balgowan" Stoneleigh Drive, Worcester Park, Surrey purchased some land in St. Albans off of Albert Walter Mills (the vendor). He had a four bedroom character house designed by a local architect (John C. Rogers) and subsequently built as 16, Park Avenue. The property was featured in "Country Life" of 17th September 1927. In published vessel passenger lists Herbert is listed as travelling from Southampton to New York, USA in 1947 with his wife Ethel. The following year, Herbert, along with his wife Ethel and daughter Constance are listed as travelling from London to Melbourne, Australia in 1948. The London Gazette of 3rd October 1950 reports that an H.G. Calkin (I assume this one) registered some freehold land at Castlewellan, Waggon Road, Hadley Wood, Middlesex. |
