Third of 8 children born to Pierre Edward and Eliza Jane
In the 1901 census Herbert was a "Boy Under Training" with many other boys at St. Germans, Cornwall.
On the night of Sunday 31st March 1901 (the census point) he is recorded as being a Navy Man (Boy 2nd Class),
on the list of the Officers, Crew, Royal Marines and all of the other persons on board the "Lion" at Maker Heights.
1911 census does not show an entry for Herbert Jacques, but it does list his wife and child (see below).
Herbert Jacques emigrated to New Zealand in about 1921, Eliza followed on 6-12 months later with the 5 sons.

         Born: 06.10.1884 at 1, Pitt Street, Peckham, registered in Camberwell.

         Married: c. 12.1907 to Eliza Ann Downing (Herbert's brother's widow) registered in Camberwell.

         Died: c. 1948 Aged 63, in New Zealand.

The 1911 census has Eliza (aged 31) and her son living at 38, Victoria Road, Peckham.
In published vessel passenger lists Eliza and the five boys are listed as travelling from Southampton to Wellington, New Zealand in 1922.

         Born: c. 03.1880 registered in Lewisham.

         Died: 06.10.1954 Aged 74, in New Zealand.

Edwin Victor Calkin M.B.E. In the London Gazette dated 3rd June 1978, it was reported that Edwin Victor Calkin J.P. and Mayor of Marton (N.Z.) had received the M.B.E. for services to local body and community affairs.
