In my grandfather's things (Arthur Calkin) I found a letter sent from the young Augustus to his Uncle Arthur.
Clearly Arthur is at war in Europe, Gus is in Australia and it is 1917. It reads:

                                                                    Lorrimore
                                                                    69, Gerard Street,
                                                                    Neutral Bay
                                                                    Nov.5th 1917.
Dear Uncle Arthur,
We received your letter today and as we have a holiday today,
mother said I had better fill in my time in writing to you.
This is the second time I have written to you, dada took the other letter to
town and posted it, but we think it has gone down as you have not received it.
What a jolly time you must have with the rats, it is a good job you have a sharp dog.
I am now ten and I am in the 4th class at school, I should have been higher
but we changed schools and kept me down in the same class for another year.
Dear uncle how do you like being in France ? I know a lot of soldier boys that
have gone from here and are having a good time before they leave for the front.
Did you know we have five soldier cousins ? Three are in France, one is in
Belgium and the other one is flying somewhere but we don't know where.
Dear uncle this is all, I will write again shortly.
I remain your affectionate nephew Gus.
