Arthur Calkin - Military Police Notebook

Amongst Arthur's possessions there was one notebook from his time as a Military Policeman during the second world war.
He worked for "Z" division and was numbered as WR 528.
The notebook is also numbered as No.124.
Here is a brief summary of some of the notes:

7th October 1940 at 10:20 p.m.
Phillip Bird aged 18 1/2 of
18, Paxton Place
West Norwood.

In the public air raid shelter adjoining Amerley Town Hall, the accused was in a group shouting and interfering with other persons. I heard the accused threaten a woman. I asked him to be quiet or go outside. He at once adopted a threatening attitude and made as though to strike me, so I closed with him and I took him into custody to South Norwood Police Station.

7th November 1940 at 4:30 p.m.

Lights were reported as being flashed nightly from 18, Harrington Road.

19th November 1940 at 5:00 p.m.

I was called to Chapman's Yard, Gladstone Road, South Norwood where Stephen John Gerrard (aged 43), of 16, Kellett Road, Brixton and employed by Croydon Corporation had fallen from a scaffold and injured both ankles.
Borough Ambulance called which arrived at 5:07 p.m. and conveyed Gerrard to Mayday Road hospital by 5:20 p.m. where he was seen by a Doctor Palmer.

29th December 1940 at 6:30 p.m.

210, Portland Road, Lights showing, no blackout up and air raid in progress.
Forced front door and extinguished light.

12th March 1941 at 7:30 p.m.

I found the door of POLLARDS, of 140, Portland Road, S.E.25 unsecurely fastened. Called keyholder Mr. J.S. Pollard who attended. In my company he examined premises and found everything correct. Mr. Pollard said, "The young lad forgot to lock it".

16th March 1941 at 6:45 p.m.

Opposite 25, Northcote Road, I found a black and tan terrier dead. The leather collar said, K.J. COOPER of 13, Dagnell Park S.E.25. I made inquiries in the vicinity and failed to ascertain how or by whom it was killed. Owner informed, who attended and removed carcass.
