Note that there is a selection of more Harry Roy Pictures if you click Right Here)

Arthur joined Harry Roy and his New Lyricals at the Bat Club in April 1931.
His scrapbook has very many pictures and cuttings from this era, too many to show all of them here.
Plus there were some we particularly wanted to present, but the scrapbook is too delicate so,
we have selected a chosen few to hopefully give a good feel of Arthur with Harry Roy
which will be interspersed amongst Harry Roy's recording career as detailed below.
(Note: A brief biography of Harry Roy appears at the bottom of the page)

The first cutting we have of Arthur with Harry Roy features an advert in an unnamed publication for a half hour radio programme, 9:45 to 10:15 p.m. Judging by the comment, the band have only recently been noticed :

Harry Roy and his RKOlians

from the London Pavilion
in

HALF-AN-HOUR'S   SYNCOPATION

This band which includes Harry Roy's Lyricals fron the Bat Club,
is appearing in 'Non-Stop' Variety at the London Pavilion.
It is one of the newest dance bands in London
- certainly one of the most popular -
and is best known for its 'hot syncopation.'

Arthur played with Harry Roy for about 7 to 8 years, from 1931 to 1938.

What follows are all the known recordings that feature Arthur Calkin with Harry Roy as quoted from Rust & Forbes - British Dance Bands on Record 1911 - 1945.

Click this image to see detail of the Rust and Forbes tome:   Rust and Forbes Detail

Most of these sessions resulted in records being produced as can be seen by the catalogue numbers. Songs with the same catalogue numbers appear on the same issue (A and B sides), the matrix number then defines the sides of the pressings. You will also see some matrix numbers assigned for pressing but rejected from the final release with another number replacing it.

I should also say that just because Rust and Forbes says the personnel listed below played on each recording, it is not necessarily the case.
The personnel shown in Rust & Forbes are mainly based on who usually played in the band at that time, whereas there are bound to be occasions where a musician couldn't attend for one reason or another, and a substitute would have been called in. The list below is a very good guide, but should not be taken as gospel.
For instance, Arthur left us records he mentioned he played on but R&F does not include him in it's band list. There are a couple that don't make sense as the recording dates quoted in Rust and Forbes don't fall in line with my Grandfather's own scrapbook which shows certain dates he joined bands. It is clear that there are discrepancies. But, we are sure back at that time he did help out with other bands and filled in on occasions when personnel weren't available. Indeed, my father also confirms as such. He definitely made un-credited appearances and missed out on some Harry Roy sessions, so we can never be sure who actually played on every recording.
In another good example, Syd Roy (Harry's brother) made a number of recordings with his "RKOlians" for Woolworth's sixpenny Eclipse label. Correspondent, and expert on the subject, Mike Thomas, mentioned to me that he thought that after the first few sessions it is pretty obvious when listening to the records, that the band is actually Harry Roy's. After all, Syd was Harry's manager and gave up actually leading a band in the early 1930s. This means there is quite likely another raft of records which Arthur seems to have played on ......

625 recordings are listed below.

305 original Parlophone record releases, with many tracks appearing on other issues at the time.

Dated about this time in our scrapbook there is a photo of the band appearing on the stage of The Astoria. It is undated.
It appears to be taken from one of the side boxes above the band, and is not re-printed here as none of the faces can be identified.

The next photo (also not shown here) is from Melody Maker dated June 1933 and appears to present the band appearing at the Cafe Anglais, as right underneath it is a newspaper cutting describing Harry's band of cricketers :

Harry Roy's Rhythm Style Cricketers in Form

During the last week or so, Harry Roy's band from the Cafe Anglais has been busy with the production
of a totally new rhythm - the kind that is produced by the meeting of willow and leather.
Harry and his boys have formed a strong cricket eleven, which is playing as many as two or
three matches a week, and giving an excellent account of itself.
The team has found a demon bowler in the person of Harry himself, who has been going great guns,
taking some four or five wickets for only a score or so of runs on most occasions.
Arthur Calkin, the bass player of the band, is another very vigorous bowler.

The article goes on to describe one match in detail in which Felix Mendelsohnn gets hospitalised
after a cricket ball hit him on the head. At the end it lists the full team which includes a
Joe Calkin (?). There is also a picture of the team, but unfortunately not very clear.

I have some 16mm cine film from 1938 of Harry Roy at one of these cricket matches !

The next cutting has a terrific picture of the two pianists with Arthur and is from Melody Maker 1st June 1935.
The caption says, "The Harry Roy 'Twins,' Ivor Moreton and Dave Kaye with 'Uncle Arthur' Calkin on the bass."
This is the first reference in the scrapbook of "Uncle Arthur" as he was affectionally christened.

There is a story with this picture which gives a nice view on Arthur:
"Uncle Arthur Calkin is a fine comedy man on the
stage in addition to being a good bass exponent.
In private life he is one of the best amateur
photographers in the musical profession"

The next article was from Melody Maker in 1936.
Underneath a picture of Arthur, he describes his bass techniques:
ARTHUR CALKIN (of Harry Roy's Band)
The booming note of the double-bass makes it a difficult instrument to control, and I
have found that a good method of damping the vibration when required is to stuff some
flock under the strings behind the bridge.
This, of course, is a suggestion for special circumstances because any well-trained
player should be able to deaden the overtone sufficiently by releasing his fingers
as soon as he has played a note.
Slapping the bass has more or less gone out. I pluck the strings with two or three
fingers at once, having long ago found it impossible to use only one finger throughout
a entire night's playing.
At first I used to use a finger-stall, but this became rather expensive because I wore
one to shreds every night! Now I use more than one finger and feel completely comfortable.
The bow nowadays is only used for waltzes and slow numbers, but four-in-a-bar bowing
sounds muddy; I recommend two-in-a-bar.

The next session is shown in the recording files as having taken place in the Garrick Theatre, Southport, during a performance on October 4th 1937. Harry Roy and his Orchestra were not appearing in Southport during that month and the date of September 2nd has been suggested as the most probable date for this session. If this is correct, it seems likely that the band recorded during the day, probably in the empty theatre, the above six sides and the following at the evening performance before an audience. The latter would have been edited and re-mastered on October 4th for issue.

Bassist
Released By
Harry Roy
A change in Harry Roy's Band is always
news, since Harry has a reputation for
keeping his boys for a long time, and
when the change concerns one of the oldest
stalwarts in the band, then it becomes
News with a vengeance.
After eight years with Harry, bass-player
Arthur Calkin has decided to settle down
in London and give up touring.
"Uncle Arthur" as he is familiarly called,
has rendered yeoman service to his leader,
and it is with genuine regret on both sides
that the parting has been decided upon.

Arthur Calkin was then replaced on Bass by Len Harrison.

Rust and Forbes list a further 10 pages of Harry Roy recordings which include another 308 recordings !

Harry Roy
Harry Roy, Born Harry Lipman 12th January 1900, Died 1st February 1971.
Harry and his brother Syd formed a band which they called 'The Darmswells'. It must have been a successful group because, when the Original Dixieland Jazz Band left the Hammersmith Palais, they were replaced by the Roy Brothers Original Lyrical Five. They again changed name becoming the Original Crichton Lyricals. At times, the band recorded as 'The Lyricals'; 'Sid Roy's Crichton Lyricals', and just 'The Crichton Lyricals'. The Roy's band was very popular in London where they played all the better spots including the Alhambra, the London Coliseum, Rector's Club, Oddenino's, and the Cavour Restaurant.
In February of 1927, they were booked into the Cafe de Paris.
During 1928, they toured to South Africa and to Australia.
In 1930 they made some recordings in Germany.
In 1931, Harry Roy left to form his own band, with Syd becoming manager of the Harry Roy band.
In 1932, the Harry Roy band was at the London Pavillion.
In Jan. 1933 they were at the Cafe Anglais, where they began remote BBC broadcasts.
From March 1934 thru June 1936, the band was resident in the Mayfair Hotel.
In 1935, Harry received quite a lot of publicity when he married Elizabeth Brooke, daughter of the Rajah of Sarawak. The same year the band was in the film 'Everything in Heaven' and in 1936 featured in the film, 'Rhythm Racketeers'.
In 1938, Harry took his band on a 3 month tour of South America.
On Oct. 16, 1939, the band was booked into the Cafe Anglais for a month. They then continued touring and theatre performances, going into the Embassy Club in October 6, 1940.
During the war years, Harry toured around. He was in the Embassy Club in 1942, and a little later, toured the middle-east. In 1948, Harry went to the U.S. but was unable to get a work permit. Returning to England, he formed a new band for the Cafe Anglais, in 1949. By the early 1950's the big band era had come to an end. Harry disbanded, but still drifted in and out of the music scene. In the 50's, he was running his own restaurant. In 1969, he led a quartet in the London Lyric Theatre's show "Oh Clarence". He was 69 years of age then, and in failing health. In February, 1971, he died in London.
