Hal Swain had a band in Toronto from 1921 to 1924 which included Dave Caplan. This band was offered a job at Rector's club in London, but the club actually went bust during the course of the voyage. Fortunately, the group found another job at the New Prince's Restaurant in Picadilly. In 1926 Hal Swain quit the band and the remaining band were offered a job in Berlin. But only a few members of the original band wanted to go, this is where Arthur stepped in, joined the band and went off to Berlin in August 1926 with the re-named Dave Caplan's Toronto Band. The above photograph was taken there.
They first played at the Faun Des Westens and then in November appeared at La Scala assisting the dance pair Annette Mills and Bobby.
This was followed by a tour including Germany, France, Belgium, Luxemburg and Rumania.

The following are the known recordings that feature Arthur Calkin.
These were made in Berlin after Arthur joined the band full-time.
Most of these sessions resulted in records being produced as can be seen by the catalogue numbers. Songs with the same catalogue numbers appear on the same issue, the matrix number then defines the sides of the pressings. You will also see some matrix numbers assigned for pressing, but rejected from the final release with another number replacing it.

The recording information below was sent to me by Mike Thomas.

The following is re-printed here from a cutting taken from an un-identified publication :

WHERE GLASGOW DANCES NIGHTLY.

The season of 1926-7 is proving that dancing as an enjoyable pastime and recreation
is still the leading amusement of both the classes and the masses.

It is wonderful to see the older and younger generations, afternoon and evenings alike,
tripping the light fantastic to the music provided at the "Plaza" Eglington Toll.

Dave Caplan's New Prince's Toronto Band is one of the best known bands throughout the world;
during their recent stay at the New Princess' Restaurant, Picadilly, London, they were
frequently broadcast by the B.B.C. and appreciative listeners throughout Europe enjoyed
their dance music.

The support band for this engagement was "The Harvard Band" as can be seen on the flyer below.
This was their first appearance of this combination in Britain.
